Types of Accommodation in New Zealand

New Zealand offers an excellent range of accommodation from stylish exclusive luxury lodges, hotels, motels, B & Bs and friendly homestays through to budget backpackers, hostels and camping grounds. Or you can be 'self-contained' and rent a holiday home, or 'bach' as we call our beach houses here.

At the height of the summer season we recommend that you, at least, book the first two nights accommodation in advance giving you time to acclimatise on your arrival.

Qualmark Rating System

New Zealand has adopted a rating system that ensures consistent quality standards across rated properties.  If a property is rated, it will display the Qualmark symbol with the relevant rating.  Properties that are rated are visited annually by a qualified professional assessor.

 When you see the Qualmark© symbol, it means that those businesses have been independently assessed against a set of national quality standards. Many of our activities operators are Qualmark Quality Assured too.

 The Qualmark system operates on a 1 to 5 star scale:

       Acceptable. Meets customers' minimum requirements. Basic, clean and comfortable accommodation.

       Good. Exceeds customers' minimum requirements with some facilities and services.

       Very good. Provides a range of facilities and services and achieves good to very good quality standards.

       Excellent. Consistently achieves high quality levels with a wide range of facilities and services.

       Exceptional. Among the best available in New Zealand.

       Indicates a property has not been assessed and/or the grade has not been finalised.
